Seeing Grey
If the time I spent in front of the laptop screen watching the series were used to take the NMAT, enroll in med school, take the board, go into internship—the works—I would’ve been an MD by now. Faster to learn all these medical facts I’ve soaked my brain in the past several days anyway.
Okay, I’m exaggerating but hey I’m a writer so I’m allowed to do this. (But just between the two of us, I think I’m honest—sometimes to a fault—in real life.)
I’m not good in Math so I can’t tell you how many hours I logged in watching Grey’s Anatomy. My interest in the series was jumpstarted by a friend, a doctor, who wrote about it. It was a long time ago but the interest resurrected when I saw a DVD copy of the first and second series.
After the first episode, there was no denying that I had to pitch my tent outside
Truth to tell, I could’ve watched all night long but this mental note stopped me: Warning! Tell heart to not get too attached to something—anything—that will blur your sense of reality. Sooner or later, you’ll find yourself thinking about characters during inopportune times, like when checking a manuscript, talking to your boss, or having lunch. Worse yet, you might think you’re the character and start imagining colleagues to be the other planets in your tiny universe (Oh, the curse of being a writer and having an overactive imagination!).
And so I heed the warning.

I'm also addicted to Grey. Well, I'm actually addicted to Izzy but the show is not named after her. I'm also addicted to House, another medical series, for an entirely different reason. but I guess that's already too much information.
I have not yet seen Grey but my interest grew after reading blogs that mention it. I'd probably buy when I see one.
After every good movie or a tv series I watched, I want the scenes to linger in my brain. I want to imagine more. I'd usually avoid watching another good movie for a month.

Hi Beng, with you and Jen so into Grey's Anatomy, I'm not tempted at all, instead, I am definitely going to steer clear from it! I don't think I want to add to my list of addictions! Thanks for this "warning"! :)
By the way, the photos didnt work with blogger, I used photobucket--which is not exactly ideal in terms of lay out..so the mystery is still unsolved...

Do you have a DVD of the series or do you watch it on TV? May I ask if it's big in Australia too? Ah, Izzy. Yes, I understand the fixation. As for House, that's next on my list. Pero ipapahinga ko muna utak ko. Too much medical info. I think we watchers deserve an honorary medical degree. haha.

How can you avoid watching another good movie for a month? :-) Try watching Grey's Anatomy with your wife. She will probably love it too, what will all the twists in the characters' relationships. House naman is good too, mas investigative ang approach. Whatever you decide on, blog about it. I'd be interested to see your take on medical series.
My wife would probably enjoy watching medical series. She's a nurse. I'm only after the drama, and not on the medical jargons. But it would probably take a time out of her review for her coming NCLEX exam.

As for your question on the identity of the doc,his name is Dr. Chris, a longtime friend. :-) He wrote something about Grey's Anatomy in his blog many months ago.
Jojie, yeah, if you still value your sleep and weekends, steer clear away from Grey's. Haha. Haven't talked with Jen yet how she's coping but I will talk to her about it soon.
I wonder what's wrong with blogger. If you get the chance, you can switch to beta blogger. Parang upgrade. One advantage is you get to categorize your entries like mine and enjoy no-hassle tweaking of your layout.

I never knew that people from the non-medical field would enjoy Grey's Anatomy. It really does talk about bits and pieces of our lives as doctors, particularly in the surgical field. We also have the habit of staring at our white board for our scheduled surgeries (O.R), so that we would know what to expect and how to prepare. Sometimes we ask the consultant if we can scrub in for an interesting surgical case to further hone our skills. The surgical interns of Grey's Anatomy are very eager to assist in a surgery because they are still in the "pre-residency" stage. Only a few will be chosen to proceed, just like here in the Philippines. It reminded me of my pre-residency days. Even if you haven't slept for more than 24 hours, you can't complain because you need to be in the residency program. I hope through this T.V. series, non-medical audiences would understand the difficulties each resident is facing daily. Which reminds me, I used to be an Interns' Monitor when I was in my 3rd year of residency. I really empathize with Miranda. Funny, but true.

I can't imagine being in a profession that would require me to stay awake for such long hours, like you do. Well, buti na lang there are people like you.
Yeah, the series is giving me a glimpse of life in the hospital. I now have a greater appreciation and respect for doctors like you.:-)

I watch Grey on the TV although the season being shown here is one year late. They've just introduced the character of Chris O'Donell last monday.I'm not sure if it's big here but that what the network would like people to believe. What was big here was Prisonbreak and 24. I'm sure the new seasons of those show will be reliegiously followed.
Hi Swipe. Looks like you're officially hooked to Grey's. Right? ;) I don't think I will get enough of these medical series. I just bought Nip/Tuck and bought House for a friend (which I imagine I'd be borrowing too). Oh well...At least it's educational. haha. But it doesn't lessen my hospital-confinement phobia one bit. Hey, I just learned you're a fellow geek. You should write more geek-related posts. PS: I have a SE phone so your most recent post was interesting for me.
